* Background Notes

I work with video, performance, and the Internet as a medium to render familiar physical experiences into digitally fabricated (non)existent spaces. In my work, the virtual representations of a human body or presence act as a recurring visual focal point. These human forms also become a playful vehicle for viewers to vicariously experience the humor and absurdity presented on screen.

From daily social media posts to Internet phenomena, my work reflects my fascination with the creation and dissemination of user-generated content online. Through readily available electronic recording devices (i.e. screencap, webcams, smartphones, consumer-grade camcorders) and ‘readymade’ preset effects on editing apps and softwares, I attempt to archive contemporary digital culture through self-produced media.

My recent projects focus on the ubiquity of electronic devices that help achieve virtual immersion and extend online experiences. Through repetitive colorful images and cyclic organic motions performed by human forms, the works induce hypnotic moments of wandering. I find these temporary states of ‘daydreaming’ analogous to that of being psychologically present and active online while being physically isolated and stationed in the material world.

"I wake up and look at my phone to read the news. I delete spam emails and advertisements that have accumulated in my inbox. I have numerous social media accounts and a quirky profile picture to match the voice. I am concerned with losing my credit card but still purchase products online and share my private information. I exchange popular weird memes and texts with my friends. I make sure to delete my search history time-to-time. I listen to a suggested/promoted music playlist allegedly compiled by some famous musician. I scroll through video clips because I can't concentrate on more than two minutes. I work on a computer and video chat with students from all around the world. I get distracted and click an online ad (by accident sometimes). I update software on my phone and computer so I can download a new app. I record video on my phone and use an app to decorate and create a gif. I catch up with the latest tech gadgets and gizmos so I don't miss out on the next-big-thing. I play games and stream the latest podcast, TV shows, movies for pass-time on my computer. I get stressed by a bootleg program that constantly crashes my computer and reassure myself that I'll never do it again. I turn off the lights and bundle up in bed with my phone (with minimum brightness) and catch up with my news-feed once more before I fall asleep. On repeat..."
