Gallery Heist is excited to announce the opening reception for "Grey Matter Paradise"
a solo exhibition by Laura Hyunjhee Kim. This is the artists first solo show with Gallery.
GREY MATTER PARADISE is a multimedia exhibition showcasing the recent drawings and videos of Laura Hyunjhee Kim. Analyzing and charting her fluxes of identities-formed by-interactions (both social and individual), Kim strives to 'make sense' of her position as a speaking subject through the observation of language and gestures. “An over-analyzed conundrum of thoughts that loses its nuance when one attempts to render them into words, one of the most poignant methods of communication -> when this process is infinitely repeated, the core-purpose is negated and lost in its own cyclic error due to the systematic complexities and thus the result becomes undeliverable” – Kim elaborates these inevitable consequences of the speechless state of mind as a 'Grey Matter Paradise.' The exhibition incorporates both static and non-static imagery that blends and bends popular culture, art history, science and technology with a twist of kaleidoscopic imagination and blank humor.
Laura Hyunjhee Kim does not demand much from the spectators but to visit -> inhale and exhale.
The opening reception will be held on Saturday October 13, 2012 from 7-10pm.
Exhibition on view October 13 - November 10, 2012
Laura Hyunjhee Kim is an interdisciplinary artist who works with video, performance and drawing. Quoting and re-contextualizing references from autobiographical anecdotes, art history, to mass media as source material, Kim often incorporates absurd (deadpan) puns, ironic and subversive humor within her work that surface through the disjunctions in language, text and gesture. She has had solo exhibitions in Blue Mountain, New York and Madison, Wisconsin and has been in numerous group exhibitions both nationally and internationally.
Kim received her B.S. in Art from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2009 and her M.F.A. from the New Genres Department, San Francisco Art Institute, in 2012. Laura Hyunjhee Kim currently resides and works in San Francisco, California.
