As our physical bodies go about their business, moving about millimeter by painstaking millimeter, our ever-expanding network of digital avatars are teleporting around the ether, carrying out tasks with an effortless efficiency reserved for virtual reality. Our avatars communicate our emotions, maintain and nourish connective moments across the boundaries of time and space, and can stay active even while we are dormant.
The works of video artists Chris Corrente and Laura Hyunjhee Kim exploit and expand on the power of the digital avatar. Obsessively digitizing their voices and bodies through the medium of video, their works seem to exist in a candidly unreal -- but convincingly authentic -- digital arena of whimsical frenzy, mirroring the forms of internet and pop culture while still drawing from traditions of performance and video art.
