The art world has - through systematic, willful, and overt alienation - distanced itself from the social spaces of popular culture. Forced differentiation between ‘high culture’ and ‘low culture’ has narrowed fine art practices, and consequently eliminated vast potential audiences.
The trio of videos in “[ul+ure [l@sh: Video Works By Chris Corrente and Laura Hyunjhee Kim” are indicative of a larger dialogue (between artist, art-audience, and art-world) centered around expanding the boundaries of fine art. By appropriating the mediums, methodologies, and tropes of popular culture, both Corrente and Kim daringly blur the line between art and entertainment. The resulting work is thoroughly informed by the history of video and performance art, but appeals to the same sensibilities as contemporary video practices - sensibilities that are usually reserved for popular culture outlets such as television and the internet.
