[Character - Miramol]
Miramol is a gender ambiguous doll, initially manufactured as a female but not identified as a she. It was made in Korea and imported to the U.S. for commercial distribution targeted towards the age group of three to eleven. Miramol was the original prototype of the ambitious 'Oriental Doll Series' designed in 1987. However before mass production, the on-going postponed project was abandoned by Atoy Inc. in 1992 (Atoy Inc. is a prestigious toy company in the market, best known for manufacturing dolls for children). Company executives were aware of the 4.29 L.A. Riots and concerned about using a Korean prototype as the representative image of their new ambitious series. Also, as the tween market started to become the new goldmine, market researchers announced that dolls should be more mature, fashionable, and realistic. Therefore, 'ugly (which the company executives started to call it after the decision of re-designing the project)' Miramol was discarded with other items such as a pink nylon wig, an ice cream cone, and a video kit. Current Location of Miramol: Unidentified. Current state of mind: Confused.
[Story and Concept]
- A playful contraption illustrating the connection between reality and the subconscious. With a particular sense of humor and an awareness of the absurd, I introduce an imaginative space and character that embraces the tension between the literal and the mundane, reality and dream, past and future, time and place.

Video Installation, viewer participatory project (individual viewing), Madison WI, U.S.
Installation was created to evoke a physical and visceral response within the viewer. Installed in a small water tank room of a dingy basement of a private house, the piece was viewed individually under the guidance of the artist. After each viewer was handcuffed with a leather belt and blind-folded, he/she entered a narrow hallway that led into a small room. In complete darkness, the viewer was seated on an old tire and directed to take off his/her blindfold when the soundtrack of the video queued. A video was shown to the viewer and he/she was directed to watch it until the artist reentered the room. The black and white video (attached below) has a fast tempo image of a blind-folded boy screaming and violently shaking accompanied by a loop Marilyn Monroe's "Anyone Can Say I Love You," specifically edited to repeat the phrases "Anyone can say I love you," "Love you," "But you belong to me" in random order. After three minutes, the visual ended with a black screen. The viewer was abandoned in complete darkness with a loop of music for another 30 seconds. After the video ended, the artist entered the room and led the individual out of the room.
